ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT SYSTEM


What is an environmental management system?

Part of the overall management system which includes organizational structure, planning activities, responsibilities, methods, procedures, processes and resources for the development, implementation, execution, evaluation and policy to protect the environment.

Implementation of environmental management system (EMS) according to ISO 14001 is voluntary and is intended to demonstrate the concern of the organization to reduce pollution by controlling the effects that it has on the environment through its activities, products or services.

The environmental management system according to ISO 14001 works in a similar way as general Quality management model as follows Deming cycle "Plan-Do - Check - Act" (PDCA - Plan-Do-Check-Act).

A. Plan

  • Perform an initial review of the organization's environment;
  • identify the relevant activity and other regulatory requirements;

Attention! Do not miss the "other" requirements: local regulations, corporate, industry and customer requirements, agreements with stakeholders and their requirements.

  • Identify gaps and plan their elimination;
  • Identify and evaluate the environmental aspects of your activities, products and services;

Attention! In identifying the aspects examined all the main and auxiliary activities (administrative, maintenance, heating, etc.) and determine they received: Emissions released into the air; Discharged wastewater; Contamination of soil; Use of natural resources and energy; Renting of energy (heat, radiation, vibration); The waste; Formation of noise, odors.

  • Potential emergency situations peculiar to the organisation;
  • Determine Environmental Policy (senior management).

Attention! Too ambitious commitments and policy statements can cause more harm than good. Any commitment to the policy must be able to be proven and is subject to verification.

  • Set goals and objectives for environment and program for their management
  • Define measures, responsibilities, resources and deadlines for their achievement, and indicators for reporting them.

B. Do

  • Implement a plan of action;
  • Document management system environment;
  • Implemented system for environmental management;
  • Define the roles and responsibilities of staff;
  • Identify competencies and provide tràining and awareness of responsibilities;
  • Perform an appropriate exchange of information - internal and external;>
  • Provide operational management of the environmental aspects;
  • Ensure readiness for emergency response, environmental.

C. Check

  • Analyze discrepancies, corrective and preventive actions;
  • Rate accordance to the applicable legal and other requirements;
  • Diagnose the problem;
  • Carried out an implementation monitoring;
  • Summarize the results of the inspection;

D. Act

  • Analyse the results;
  • Correct management system environment, where appropriate;>
  • Conduct further tràining;
  • Conduct a review of management.

Typical documents required by the legislation, subject to consideration when implementing an Environmental Management System:
  • Worksheets for waste classification, according to Ordinance ¹ 2 of 23.07.2014 for waste classification;
  • Waste reporting books, according to Ordinance ¹ 1 of 04.06 2014 on the procedure and templates for providing information on waste activities, as well as the procedure for keeping public registers;
  • Registration documents/Permits for waste activities, according to the Waste Management Act;
  • Complex permits, according to the Environmental Protection Act;
  • Annual reports on waste, according to Ordinance ¹ 1 of 04.06.2014 on the procedure and templates for providing information on waste activities, as well as the procedure for keeping public registers;
  • Certificates of registration (for entry in the Register of persons who place on the market batteries and accumulators, electrical and electronic equipment; oils; tires and plastic bags), according to the Law on Waste Management;
  • Contracts for transfer of the generated waste, according to the Waste Management Act;
  • Contract with an organization for waste recovery for participation in collective systems, according to the Waste Management Act;
  • Identification documents for handing over hazardous waste, according to Ordinance ¹ 1 of 04.06.2014 on the procedure and templates for providing information on waste activities, as well as the procedure for keeping public registers;
  • Permit under Art. 104, para. 1 of the Environmental Protection Act
  • Permits for water use of own water source, according to the Water Act;
  • Annual reports on water consumption from own water source;
  • Results of own monitoring of: emissions into the air, Quality of water from own water source, Quality of wastewater, noise in the environment;
  • Documents proving passed technical supervision over the facilities with increased danger;
  • Safety data sheets for chemicals and mixtures;
  • Evidence for maintenance and inspection of air conditioning systems (file);
  • Evidence for fulfilment of the fire safety requirements, according to Ordinance ¹8121ç-647 from 01.10.2014 on the rules and norms for fire safety during operation of the sites.
